Enhancement of Local Manufacturing & Energy Crop Cultivation For Clean Cooking Supply Chains

Context

Practical Action, in partnership with the Clean Cooking Association of Kenya and Gamos East Africa, is implementing the Enhancement of Local Manufacturing and Energy Crop Cultivation for Clean Cooking Supply Chains in Kenya (ELMECC) project.

The initiative is led by the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum (MoEP) and funded by UK PACT (Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions).

It supports Kenya's ambition of achieving clean cooking for all by 2028 by facilitating local manufacturing of clean cooking technologies and the cultivation of sustainable energy crops.

Project Objectives

  • Strengthen local manufacturing of clean cooking appliances.
  • Develop sustainable energy crop cultivation systems to secure reliable and clean fuel supply chains.
  • Promote inclusive, market-driven solutions that enhance local production, expand adoption and create green jobs.

Project Outputs

  • Knowledge products (market studies and sector reports).
  • Capacity building of manufacturers and farmer groups.
  • Established Communities of Practice, market linkages, innovative carbon finance and pilot energy crop sites.
  • Inclusive business models and new green job opportunities.

Expected Outcomes

  • Enhanced capacity and evidence-based decision-making on locally produced fuels/technologies.
  • Increased production of high-quality, clean cooking stoves and fuels.
  • Increased availability and equitable adoption of clean cooking solutions by end users.
  • Increased inclusive income earning opportunities in clean cooking value chains.

  • Baseline Studies: Surveys, Gender, Disability and Social Inclusion (GEDSI), Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning frameworks.
  • Capacity Building & Business Development: Technical training, GEDSI workshops, business support.
  • Market & Value Chain Development: Communities of Practice, market linkages, pilot energy crops and carbon finance.
  • Knowledge Sharing & Institutionalisation: Knowledge products, technical working groups and policy integration.
